Bringing a puppy home is exciting. A little preparation can make those first days calmer and help your new companion explore safely. Walk through your home from a puppy’s eye level before arrival, and ask your veterinarian for advice suited to your puppy’s age and health.

Start with a calm space

Choose a quiet, comfortable resting place away from busy walkways. Set up a bed and clean drinking water, and introduce your puppy to the home gradually. A baby gate can help keep rooms or stairs out of reach while everyone settles into a routine. PDSA’s first-day guide recommends keeping introductions calm and avoiding too much activity at once.

Move hazards out of reach

Secure loose electrical cables and put cleaning products, medicines, sharp objects and small items in closed cupboards. Check balconies, railings and window openings for gaps a puppy could squeeze through. Store food and waste securely, and ask your veterinarian which household plants and foods could be harmful. PDSA’s puppy checklist offers more ideas for preparing a safe home.

Make a family routine

Agree on who will provide meals, fresh water, supervision and toilet opportunities. Ask the breeder or rehoming organisation about the puppy’s current food and routine, and discuss changes with your veterinarian. Reward appropriate toilet habits gently; accidents are part of learning.

Plan safe introductions

Give your puppy time to rest and avoid overwhelming them with visitors. If children live in the home, supervise interactions and teach gentle handling. Ask your veterinarian about safe socialisation and where your puppy can go before vaccinations are complete.

Keep records and contacts ready

Collect the vaccination and care records available at handover, note the current diet, and arrange a veterinary check. Keep your veterinarian’s number handy. You can also explore Aubree’s puppy care guide and first-week guide for more planning ideas.
